CHOREOGRAPHINGTHE CAMERA - Techniques for filming dance dynamically

This workshop will provide dance-artists with simple techniques for capturing dance on film. Whether you are building a reel, wanting to post your latest on instagram or making an original screen dance, these simple, no-budget techniques will help.  We will explore a variety of angles, camera movements, and approaches, considering the technical and creative how's and why's behind each shot.  Participants should leave the workshop with simple, practical tools for setting-up dance shots, using found light, everyday tools, and pairing camera and dance movement.

As a former principal dancerwith the Joffrey Ballet and Pennsylvania Ballet, and as an international guestartist, Ms. Carothers-Aromaa has danced extensively throughout the UnitedStates, Europe, and Asia. She was featured on television in Dance inAmerica's A Night At The Joffrey, televised on PBS, TheDiana Ross ShowThe Merv Griffen Show, and others. 

Duringher many years as a leading dancer with the Joffrey Ballet, she danced a widerange of principal roles, in works by Sir Frederick Ashton, Jiri Kylian, MarkMorris, Ben Stevenson, Glen Tetley, and Twyla Tharp, amongst others. During hercareer, leading roles were created for her by Robert Joffrey, William Forsythe,Gerald Arpino, Dwight Rhoden, John Clifford, and many others.

Inthe Pennsylvania Ballet, Ms. Carothers-Aromaa danced the title roles in TheNutcracker, Swan LakeCoppeliaGiselleTheSleeping Beauty, and Cranko's Romeo and Juliet, as well as anextensive repertoire of the ballets of George Balanchine. Ms. Carothers-Aromaa  has been a guest teacher at manyschools both in the United States and Europe, and was on faculty and directedthe Dance Institute at The Colburn School in Los Angeles for almost a decade.She currently teaches ballet and Zena Rommett Floor Barre in the Los Angelesarea.

While in Salt Lake City, Keith danced in theRirie/Woodbury Dance Company working with such choreographers as AlwinNikolais, Murray Louis, Shapiroand Smith, Kei Takei, and Loa Clawson. In New York City he joined the Bill T.Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company, touring the widely acclaimed workStill/Here bothnationally and internationally. He also danced in the companies ofCreach/Koester and Doug Varone and Dancers. He has also done pick-up workdancing in the companies of Spencer/Colton in Boston and Janis Brenner inCalifornia. As part of Doug Varone and Dancers, Keith performed with The Denver Opera and in a site-specificwork Neither,which took place in The Lower East Side TenementMuseum in New York City. As a performer he has performed in major festivals andconcert halls worldwide including the Joyce Theatre, Jacob’s Pillow, the REDCATTheatre, Tokyo International Festival, The Melbourne Festival, and QueenElizabeth Hall in England. Keith has also performed with Colleen Thomas Dance,Bill Young/Colleen Thomas and Dancers, and Victoria Marks. Keith also performedin The Pod Projectby choreographer/director NancyBannon.  His work has been shown in various venues including theUniversity of Utah (with Stephen Koester), The LIT Series, Joyce Soho (withColleen Thomas), The Rose Wagner Theater in Salt Lake City, The Center StageTheatre (with Stephanie Nugent), Commuter Festival (CalArts), Breaking GroundFestival, ADF, Highways,  Dixon Place (NYC) Tempe Center for the Arts(AZ), Sugar Space in (UT),  Velocity (WA), Ruth Page Center For TheArts (IL), DUMBO Festival (NY), SUNY Brockport (NY), SUNY Purchase(NY)  and The Diavolo Space (LA). His work has been commissioned bythe Ririe/Woodbury Dance Company, d9 Collective, CONDER/dance, ContemporaryDanceworks, various solo artists, and universities. In 2012, Keith has twoworks represented at the National ACDFA conference at the Kennedy Center inWashington DC. The performers from Loyola Marymount University were chosen asthe Outstanding Student Performer Award for their work in Unscripted/RiptideInto Me. Keith also makes dance films with collaborator Gregory R. R.Crosby and together they have formed Fistbomb Films. Their film, LifeIn Security, has been screened at the Breaking Ground Festival and Film Bar(both in Arizona), Westfest (New York), Dance For The Camera Festival(California), Conversations at the Flea (New York), and American DanceFestival’s International Screendance Festival. He is on faculty at CSULB.
